About James Powell
I'm an editor, coach, and writer who helps fiction writers
sharpen their craft and finish strong.
For over 30 years, I've worked with writers and editors, the last ten of which have been devoted to comics and fiction. I've edited for Dark Horse Comics, Image Comics, and hundreds of indie creators. I wrote House of Fear (Dark Horse), a comic series that introduces kids to the thrills of scary stories, and I've run nine successful Kickstarter campaigns.
I quit my high-paying corporate writing job in 2020 to edit fiction full-time. Best decision I ever made.
Who I work with: Genre fiction writers (novels and comics) who are serious about giving readers an incredible story they can't stop talking about. Writers who want to improve, not just finish.
What I offer:
- Editing for novels and comic scripts
- Coaching for writers who need guidance, accountability, or a fresh perspective
- Teaching through my Substack, workshops, and books
I've been writing and editing professionally since college. I've reviewed comics, edited memoirs, and worked as a managing editor for a small newspaper in Utah. I've done corporate documentation, news reports, and yes, even obituaries.
But fiction is where my heart is. And helping writers navigate the messy, rewarding process of creating something worth reading? That's what gets me out of bed.
Storytelling is my life.
Helping others tell better stories is my passion.
If you're ready to level up your craft, let's talk.
